Twin brothers Chun Kaifeng and Chun Kaiqun are displaying an art-as-child's-play aesthetic for their first combined solo exhibitions. At the heart of it all, both artists have much to say about the country they have grown up in. They lampoon amusement parks in an oblique way of questioning why Singapore's tourism image is driven by economic initiatives that can do with more imagination; why childhood past-times have evolved to a sterile, character-less ghost of yesteryear's dirt-under-fingernails' games; or why people are paying money to entertain themselves literally to a spiritual death. Whatever the answer, fun is definitely a main element in this exhibition - streaked with cruelty, danger and violence. Visit http://www.post-museum.org for more information.
Qiu Zhijie explores the basis of nationhood and of the geopolitical and psychological attachments to Nanjing City; in over 40 stunning works created at Singapore Tyler Print Institute (STPI). Visit http://www.stpi.com.sg for more details.
This exhibition is a good example where a prominent Southeast Asian artist is introduced through thematic sections, which will render an intimate and striking portrait of the artist's life, works and practice in painting over the last decade. The exhibition desires to evoke and present a striking portrait of Masriadi through the displayed works and the exhibition design, seen through four thematic sections, each providing a different angle to understand different façades of Masriadi's personality, his commitment to painting and the formal and thematic aspects in his works. Of the ambitions and desires of empires, nations, cities and individuals, Bound for Glory articulates the pursuit of recognition, presented through five works by the Malaysian contemporary artist Wong Hoy Cheong. Artworks presented in the exhibition include: Re:Looking (2002-2003), Chronicles of Crime (2006), Suburbia: Bukit Beruntung, Subang Jaya (2006), Anthem (2006), Aman Sulukule and Canim Sulukule / Oh Sulukule, Darling Sulukule (2007). Coming from Georgetown, Penang, the internationally-recognised artist's practice is inter-disciplinary, involving areas such as drawing, installation, theatre, performance and video. Jinnie Seo's latest installation transforms the newly constructed glass atrium of the National Museum of Singapore into a turbulent theatrical domain. The National Museum's modernist glass atrium, originally a transparent light filled environment, has become a dynamic multi-hued site dominated by the kaleidoscopic interplay of reds, blues, greens, grays and silvers. Utilising vinyl film sheets adhered onto the interior and exterior of the glass façade, Seo has designed a monumental mural inspired by the dark side of nature as manifested in a tropical storm. STORM has been commissioned by the National Museum of Singapore under its Art-On-Site programme. Visit http://www.nationalmuseum.sg for more information. In tandem with the SB2008 and its theme of Wonder, Confabulation explores the distorted narratives of our memories. Personal memories, as well as collective history, are often built upon the continuous falsification and manipulation of the supposed ‘truth’ of events. Aesthetic activities are frequently a subconscious response to false memories and souvenirs of life experiences. Confabulation presents provocative works by various artists who have been exploring the relationship between reality and personal memory. Artists: Chris Levine, Gottfried Helnwein, Derek Boshier, Kevin Bourgeois, Jim Christensen, Renée Stout, John Waters, David Gremard Romero, Steve Dryden and Andy Diaz Hope Artist Talk

An exhibition of work by Jitish Kallat, a painter and installation artist who has shown his work internationally. Following on from other works by Kallat, which explore political oration, Public Notice II (2007) re-invokes the momentous speech delivered by Mahatma Gandhi on the eve of the historic 400 kilometre ‘Dandi March’ during the Indian Freedom Struggle. On March 11, 1930, prior to setting out to break the Salt Act instituted by the British, Gandhi laid out the codes of conduct for his fellow revolutionaries. He called for complete Civil Disobedience; the only restriction being that of maintaining ‘total peace’ and ‘absolute non-violence’. Jitish Kallat was born 1974 in Mumbai, India. He lives and works in Mumbai. From 1996 to 1997, he was a Fellow at the Sir J.J. School of Art, Mumbai. From 1990 to 1996, he did his BFA in painting) at the Sir J.J. School of Art, Mumbai. Ronald Ventura in Mapping the Corporeal lays groundwork for an investigation of the commodification of the human body, paranoia and religious consciousness in modern societies. In his most recent series, the material existence of modern life is approached as a terrain that marks the regulation of social life from its interior, following it, interpreting it, absorbing it, and rearticulating it as a situation where the production and reproduction of life itself is at sake. Ventura expresses these 'tensions' in the form of sculptures, assemblages and hyperrealist paintings which are created mainly in graphite on canvas. Ronald Ventura was born in 1973 and studied painting at the Philippines College of Architecture and Fine Arts, University of Santo Tomas, Manila. The exhibition will be presented during the period of the Singapore Biennale 2008. OCTOBER

For the past year Jack Youngblood has been artist in residence at Ksatria Gameworks (a Singaporean computer games design company). The work that he has done during this time he is now presenting in this one-man show. Its themes reference heavily the lurid and dramatic imagery of which contemporary computer games are frequently composed. The work also addresses such notions as ‘the hero’, ‘the beauty’, death and loss and is a development of the ‘old spaceman’ imagery that has constituted his other shows in Singapore. Though the work will mostly consist of digital painting, oil painting and sculpture will also be on view. His work is very technically accomplished (he is known as something of a ‘Photoshop Jedi’) and, during the show, as part of Post-Museum’s outreach programme, he will give demonstrations on the technical issues surrounding the work’s manufacture as well as talking about the ideas that inform Visit http://www.post-museum.org for more information.
