This panel brings together artist Aarti Sunder with media theorist David Bering-Porter, for presentations of their recent work on digital images and platforms spanning MTurk and social media. This will be followed by a conversation on convergences between their art and writing – across the histories of digital ethnography, critical approaches to the moving image and regenerative media, questions of living and undead labour.



This programme is curated by Jeannine Tang as part of the Singapore Biennale 2022 named Natasha, organised by the Singapore Art Museum, with support from SAM Residencies. Co-presented with the Vera List Center for Art and Politics at The New School, New York.

 is Assistant Professor of Culture and Media at The New School in New York City. David has lectured, taught, and published on zombie movies and other forms of Black horror. Additional research interests bring together digital media theory, cultural studies, and emerging political economies and he teaches regularly on generative media and race and the digital. David is a founding member of the Digital Theory Lab at NYU and is an ongoing member of the steering committee for the Code as a Liberal Art program at The New School. His current book project is a study of Undead Labor and the ways that race, labor, and value come together in the mediated body of the zombie and his academic writing has appeared in journals such as Culture Machine, Critical Inquiry, Flow, MIRAJ, Post 45, and the Los Angeles Review of Books.



’s research and practice lies at the crossroads of digital humanities and contemporary art. She is interested in the fictions arising from investigating situated experiences and asking if these help us rethink the ways in which we understand technology and our relationship with it. Aarti focuses on contemporary labor practices, the fictional edges of protest, myth and digital-terrestrial play. She is interested in problematising the determined linearity of “progress” inscribed within the promise of the algorithm, technological prowess and a quantifiable future. By examining a globalized framework of precarious labor, non-human exhaustion and storytelling at the strategic intersection of power, knowledge and aesthetics, she believes can help us tell better stories of fictions past, present and future.

: Dewesternisation or Decoloniality? Calling into Question the Planetary Future of Digital Sovereignty




Over the last decade, a number of groups have put into place digital sovereignty initiatives in different contexts to challenge the technological status quo. From state-led to bottom-up versions, most of these initiatives challenge the US technological hegemony. Against this backdrop, Dewesternisation or Decoloniality? Calling into Question the Planetary Future of Digital Sovereignty asks whether digital sovereignty can help advance what Latin American decolonial thinking calls decoloniality, i.e., enabling worlds that, unlike modernity, are not based on anthropocentric, heteropatriarchal, capitalist and racist structures.



 is a series of four conversations with artists and scholars on ideas around platforms and platformization as an expanded and broad context of online-offline relationships that brings bodies (human and non-human), digital conduits, physical infrastructures and the marketplace together. Rather than seeking additional definitions for platforms, these conversations look to offer methods of thinking around them, newer ways of perceiving and investigating interactions that stem from them.



 is a Postdoctoral Scholar at the Centre of Governance and Human Rights, University of Cambridge. Applying Latin American decolonial theory, Sebastián's research focuses on the governance of digital technology in relation to global social justice. His work has been published in top journals including Information, Communication & Society, and was recently recognised with the 2022 Dissertation Award from the Association of Internet Researchers (AoIR).

Daniel Lie invites participants to engage with and understand their practice from paintings to installation. In their paintings, they use various organic materials to explore the idea of life and death, or as they call it, dife and leath. At level 2, they explore the fragility of life through the cycle of organic materials such as flowers and flaxseeds. This installation cohabits with the complexity of an installation environment that is at the same time rotting, sprouting, living and dying.

In this session, we learn more from edible garden designer Ee Peng, who has been providing herbs for the Wah Son Engineering staff's lunches, as she shares more about her practice in turning rubble land into a thriving garden by diverting local waste streams into high utilisation for agricultural and horticultural development. Researcher and curator Gatari Surya Kusuma will also share her work on how narratives and rituals become a tool for preserving local knowledge. Moderating the session is artist, Åsa Sonjasdotter, who will share more about her work with farmers in South Sweden.

The sculptural dyad The Hybrid Intermediates – Flourishing Electrophorus Duo (2022) by artist Haegue Yang was conceived specially for the Singapore Biennale 2022. Poised on casters, each life-sized work features sculpted electrical outlets housed in “bodies”, which are topped with colourful gardens of plastic vegetables. These complex and self-insisting sculptures address the actual and metaphorical possibility of movement. Watch this dynamic pair come to life in this live activation.

Singapore Biennale 2022 Closing Programmes

 is a series that features conversations between art and critical technoscience on intelligence, knowledge, and capacity. Each panel features artists and theorists who have troubled commonplace cultural investments in notions of intelligence, gender, sex and race as predictably inherited characteristics, by way of social questions of kinship, reproduction and labour. Across the hubs and labs of the university, spaces of interaction online and within the digital image, their work has traversed disciplines and forged uncommon kinships and collaborations. By bringing together technologies of machine and human intelligence with their symbolic, social and metaphoric worlds, these speakers weave together multiple feminisms on/offline, work between scientists and artists, relations of family and relationships with machines, entanglements between the living and (un)dead.

The title of this series cites Francis Galton’s 1875 growing of sweet peas to calculate the difference in weights between mother peas and their offspring, and his theorisations that variance between families nonetheless combined to produce a normally distributed population. Galton would subsequently substitute human characteristics for the use of sweet peas, producing eugenicist theories of human ancestral hereditary and earlier biometrical methods, which today traverse population sciences across technological, biological and social domains. Not only have sweet peas existed as a food source and subject for the development of technoscientific method, they have also since become an affectionate endearment, applied especially to young kin, offspring and companion pets. The storied life of sweet peas as subject and cultural metaphor arguably extends into the present, through advancements in technoscience and predictive temporalities, across smart technology and AI’s resuscitation of racial sciences of craniotomy and phrenology, the feminisation of digital assistance and companion robotics, fears of racial contamination and the unruliness of multiplicitous, indeterminate sex.

The work gathered here reflect strands of critical experimentalism in contemporary art in conjunction with technoscientific practise, while incorporating reflexive approaches to methods and machines, particularly with regards to their effects upon corporeal bodies and social identity, and enmeshment with population control across labour, welfare, health and security. Against the enclosure of futurity by cloned and coded pasts, these speakers have not shied away from machine and nonhuman forms of intelligence, but sought them out, while finding other ways to co-exist with other peoples, zombies, robots, and ancestors. Working beyond colonial dynamics of command and control, these speakers have given us other progenies, and offered them–and ourselves–other, more surprising futures.

Kancil Mengadap Beringin (The Mousedeer Comes Before the Banyan Tree) is an artwork installation by artist 

, which consists of a banyan tree surrounded by 99 kancil (or mousedeer) cement sculptures and two wooden components.
The artwork is accompanied by a book of the same name, which tells the tale of Sang Kancil’s latest adventure, where he acts as a mediator between animals and the universe, with a banyan tree acting as a spiritual transmitter.

Shooshie Sulaiman’s 

(2019-2022) is a site-specific sculptural installation with a banyan tree that takes root on Lazarus island. The installation is accompanied by a children’s storybook by the artist that will be introduced during the programme, along with other tales of the artwork and of our entwinement with nature and beyond.

A Logistical Reckoning with Platform Economy's Self-governance will address how the promise of platform ecosystems is tied up with monopolistic ambitions and facilitation of logistical maneuvers. It will therefore bring the questions of political economy in conversation with algorithmic reconfigurations of everyday life.



 received his PhD in Film and Television Studies from the University of Glasgow, before joining IIT Indore as an Assistant Professor in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. His essays have appeared in leading international journals including Social Text, Postmodern Culture, Media Industries and Soundings: An Interdisciplinary Journal. He is also author of the recently published Provincializing Bollywood: Bhojpuri Cinema in a Comparative Media Crucible (Oxford University Press, 2021).

Join artist Kiran Kumar for a workshop introducing a somatic approach to geometric drawing and dancing. By drawing dots and lines on the floor, participants will enact these forms with their bodies through dance. The exercises combine the āsana (posture) and prāṇāyāma (breath modulation) practices of the Haṭha yoga; kolam drawings in the Tamil tradition; various forms of temple dancing across India and Indonesia; and meditative visualisation.

Patterns of Perception: An Atypical Performative Intervention of Sensorial Accessibility

In this 45-minute guided journey, experience the Singapore Biennale 2022 artworks through your senses—hearing, touch, taste, smell and sight—or in their absence. This multi-sensorial experience, which features sign language, audio description and ASMR, is underpinned by the “aesthetics of access,” an approach to artistic production in which accessibility considerations actively shape the final creation. Patterns of Perception is co-curated by Singapore Art Museum and Access Path founder and theatre-maker Grace Lee-Khoo, performer and musician Wheelsmith and ASMR artist Melinda Lauw (Whisperlodge).


This programme is recommended for ages 16 years and up. This is not a seated performance, the group will be moving about the galleries and other areas of Tanjong Pagar Distripark.

In this performance, Aya Metwalli will be singing along with the LYRA-8; the unique organismic analogue synthesizer designed by Vlad Kreimer. “Organismic” means that LYRA uses some principles that lie in the base of living organisms. The way how LYRA’s modules interact between each other, and the behaviour of the instrument resembles a live conversation. It’s wrapped up in an intriguing and possibly believable story about its origins in the Soviet whale communication experiments of the 1960’s. In an attempt to find a common language, Metwalli will tune the machine to an Arabic maqam, unleash the sounds of the beast and react to it with her own raw voice. It is an improvisation where the artist performs an ego death live, exhibiting full surrender to the drawn-out drones, distorted whale calls, metallic harshness and dissonances of her synthesizer.

“Natasha, you are not alone… Now meet the rest of us.”



Join curator Adele Tan, artist Erika Tan and invited guests for an afternoon of making present, visible and audible the experiences, networks and art practices of women practitioners in and from Singapore. Meet, share, make friends, swap notes, construct and deconstruct histories and futures in relation to feminist principles of reflexivity, participation, social action and self-determination; and openly discuss intersectionality, representation, tokenism, feminist frameworks and institutional responsibilities.

Though there is no shortage of women working in the arts in Singapore today, we still have cause to ask why there are no “great women artists” in this country to be reckoned with for major international platforms, global institutions and even our national collection? Their lack of representation reveals a need for more active, autonomous and accessible forms of documentation, and a more consistent pursuit of collective bodies of knowledge.

This Slideshow Party in Singapore is inspired by an “informal slide evening” organised as an “Open Space” Event for the Hayward Annual 78 in London. The groundbreaking 1978 event was curated by an all-women artist committee, including the Singapore sculptor and printmaker Kim Lim. Women artists were invited to share three slides on their artworks and the public was also invited.

Slideshow Party continues its legacy as a form of collective history making. Your participation and contributions are crucial to its success. Prior and during the event, you are invited to contribute content to an 

, which will be displayed during the event and act as a repository of shared material, becoming a resource for future artists and researchers. Instructions for how to add material can be found on the platform. We are particularly interested in documentation of exhibitions, works and practitioners that prioritise Singapore women’s art histories.

Documentation of the event will be deposited with the Singapore Art Museum, the National Gallery Singapore and the artist Erika Tan as a historic record of the gathering.

At Natasha, Valentina Desideri and Denise Ferreira da Silva will host a two-day Sensing Salon programme where they will introduce a first version of a new reading tool they are in the process of creating: the Echo Tarot deck. The deck takes the poems of African American-Japanese poet Ai Ogawa as a starting point to produce a new vision for the tarot, one that speculates on nonviolent as well as generous and generative ways of living on this planet.


On the first day, they will discuss their approach to reading and introduce the basic structure of the Tarot and the traditional interpretations of each card. On the second day, they will introduce the Echo Tarot Deck, its process and development, and will use a preliminary deck to perform a collective reading with the participants. Participation to both days of the Sensing Salon is preferred, especially if audiences are unfamiliar with Tarot.

[SB2022 Opening] Untitled (Intermission) an occupation of performance - a suite of structured improvisations

Join Mr Kenny Chua who will share more about how the vegetable market at the Pasir Panjang Wholesale Centre operates and the changes in vegetable trade since the 1970s. The first of three interventions organised as part of the Pachamanca food action programme spearheaded by Åsa Sonjasdotter and Daniela Zambrano and presented as part of Singapore Biennale 2022 named Natasha, organised by the Singapore Art Museum.

Donghwan Kam, Sophia Park and Ying Que will be joined by Asia Art Archive and KUNCI Study Forum and Collective to host a tasteful gathering with Nina bell and friends. Guests are invited to a gathering where they will be served dumplings with soy sauce, in particular the one that has been fermented during Singapore Biennale 2022 named Natasha at various locations by Kam and many other human and non-human collaborators. Kam’s fermentation process has been an important metaphor for understanding the workings of the archive presented in the Nina bell F. House Museum. Taking cues from intuitive ways of cooking without a fixed recipe and the joys of mixing “ingredients”, fermentation can take place with a lens of understanding diverse archival practices. A Taste of Nina bell F. House Museum will prepare the workshop participants for the Nina spirit.

This workshop will be held on Level 3, Singapore Art Museum at Tanjong Pagar Distripark.

As part of SB2022 Artist Wu Mali's work, five selected Art History students from the National University of Singapore (NUS) participated in a one-week immersion at Cijin Island, Kaohsiung, in Taiwan. The exchange between NUS students and Wu's students from National Kaohsiung Normal University will cumulate in a one-day public programme titled
