| 21 September 2011 |
SB2011 and the Singapore Art Museum is delighted that SB2011 artist Charles Lim’s work All The Lines Flow Out received a special mention award in the Orizzonti (New Horizon) section of the 68th Venice Film Festival on 10 September. This is the first time a Singaporean film has won an award in Venice, a remarkable achievement as it is also the first Singapore film selected to compete in the Orizzonti category since its inception in 2004.
In a statement released about the film, the jury said, “Charles Lim Yi Yong’s striking cinematography maps the water passages of the contemporary city, creating an abstract mystery appropriate to an era of hyper-mobility, virtual networks and ecological crisis.”
All The Lines Flow Out was originally conceived by Lim as a video installation and was made possible due to SB2011 commissioning Lim to complete and present it as All Lines Flow Out, for the Biennale. The Singapore Art Museum, organiser for the SB 2011, has since acquired the video work.
Paolo Bertolin, Consultant of the Venice Film Festival, added: “All The Lines Flow Out was indeed one of the titles in the whole Orizzonti line-up that best expressed the spirit of the section itself. As a program that tries to detect and investigate the new directions and perspectives in contemporary cinema, it inevitably has to cope with the many influences and crosspollinations coming from the arts world, where Charles has so far been active. And the fact that this work was first presented as an installation, albeit in a different version, tells a lot about the relevance and contribution that visual artists could bring into the more challenging and experimental fringes of cinema. Once again, Charles' films is a truly mesmerizing visual and audio experience, a tremendously sensorial film that leads you to an unusual exploration of Singapore through the meandering canals that traverse the city and finally leading to its ultimate border, the sea. A visual narrative about socio-political geography that fascinates and leaves in awe like the most unexpected and realistic sci-fi movie you could ever imagine.”

26 May 2011
Mr. Tan Boon Hui, Director of SAM said that the significant indoor or admitted visitor number of over 196,000 reflects “how the Singapore Biennale has been able to attract a captive audience or visitors who came specially to experience the works…SB2011 has been another step up in reinforcing the international profile of Singapore as a leading destination for contemporary art.”
Mr. Matthew Ngui, Artistic Director of the Biennale commented that the curatorial team "consciously developed a relationship between the artworks and the local venues… [and]encouraged the artists to make their work relevant to places and communities of people." |
 |

The Biennale was a 9 week visual feast for many. Visitors came and experienced interesting works at (clockwise from top left) Old Kallang Airport, Singapore Art Museum, Merlion Park at Marina Bay and National Museum of Singapore. |
We hope that this edition of the Singapore Biennale have captured your imagination with a thoroughly enjoyable, eye opening and thought-provoking experience with contemporary art and the artists. Our appreciation goes to all artists, volunteers, sponsors, partners, visitors and media for all the support - thank you for making Singapore Biennale 2011 a success!

15 May 2011 was a day of double joy for 31-year-old financial planner, Mr Nick Lim. He won a complimentary stay at The Merlion Hotel on the last night of the Biennale from the I Should Stay at The Merlion Hotel contest, but best of all, he was also successful in his marriage proposal to his girlfriend of 3 years, Ms Tang Kwan Ying, who lives in Hong Kong. The couple met at the wedding banquet of Ms Tang's sister in Singapore.
Congratulations to Mr Nick Lim and his fiancée! |

Mr Nick Lim was one of the two winners of the I Should Stay at The Merlion Hotel contest which received some 240 applications. He wanted to use this special opportunity to propose to his girlfriend of 3 years at The Merlion Hotel against the spectacular backdrop of the Marina Bay waterfront. The other winner, Mdm Chang Tai, 63, spent the night at The Merlion Hotel with her husband on 13 March 2011 as a remembrance of her marriage proposal with the Merlion as a witness 40 years ago. The winners were picked by the organiser Singapore Art Museum in consultation with The Merlion Hotel artist Tatzu Nishi.
